Common Electrical Code Violations:

Electrical code violations pose serious health and safety risks to anyone in a property. The common wiring problems, wrong electrical installations, and mistakes have the potential to cause short circuits, shocks and even fires. Avoid these violations that could cost you your property and your life:

  • Wiring mistakes: Short wire connections, and loose connections are extremely dangerous creating a fire hazard. As a safety precaution, always leave the wires long enough to extend at least six inches from the electrical box. Tight enough all the screws and connections that secure, support or set any wires.
  • Exposed wires: Wires should never be connected outside of an electrical box, conduit or raceway. Wire can be exposed without the proper insulation. If there is a short circuit or loose connection, there is nothing to protect the surrounding area from damage from sparks and heat, creating a fire hazard!
  • Faulty circuit breaker: The circuit breakers have an uncertain lifespan. If your circuit breaker seems to be going bad, it could result in a fire inside the panel. Signs of a faulty circuit breaker include an unpleasant smell from the panel, or other signs of burning such as breakers that are hot to the touch. The circuit breakers must match with the electrical panel where they are installed, using the same brand and specification by manufactures.
  • Overfilling electrical boxes: Too many wires jammed into a box can cause dangerous overheating, melting, and short-circuiting and could result in fire.
  • Backward-wired GFCI: Ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs) are often located in bathrooms and kitchens near water outlets. They protect people from getting shocked by shutting off if there is a variation in the current. If GFCI are wired backwards, non-properly installed or defective, they will not perform their intended function resulting in sometimes fatal consequences.
  • Reversing hot and neutral wires: If a hot, black wire is connected to an outlet’s neutral terminal, the result can be a deadly electrical shock. Make sure the white wire is always connected to the neutral terminal.
  • Damaged outlets: If any outlets are loose, they need to be fixed immediately. Loosely connected outlets can shift around, causing the wires to loosen from the terminals. Loose wires can overheat, creating a potential fire hazard in your home.
  • Electrical Panels: Most of common code issue are caused by wrong installed or defective electrical panels. Electrical panels must keep updated and secure. Like most electrical systems, an electrical panel has an uncertain lifespan. Panel Manufactures discontinue the support and part for some electrical panels with the pass of years. Some of the electrical panels with over 20 years are declare un-safe for labs.
